Arkoni Appoints Estimator

Brighouse-based manufacturing business Arkoni Ltd has recently appointed Lee O’Donnell to the position of Design Estimator.

Born on the Isle of Wight and now based in Bradford, Lee began his working life as an apprentice fabricator before moving into estimating and CAD design with a particular focus on security glazing systems.

“I’m delighted to have got this job with what is one of the region’s fastest growing manufacturing businesses,” said Lee, a keen rugby league player and fan of Leeds Rhinos.

Arkoni MD Mark Prentice commented: “Lee has joined Arkoni during the busiest trading period in its 25 year history. His design and estimation skills, as well as extensive industry experience, will play a big part in dealing with our increasing workload.”

Brooky's Brief from Donington

Race Team Arkoni News

Brooky's Brief from Donington

I rode as hard as I could at Donington. We tried everything to find time in the bike on the test day despite several red flags and lost track time but with no luck.

At Anglesey I felt like I showed what I could do when horsepower wasn't essential but I was worried about Donington as it’s a horsepower circuit.

My sector 3, the tight and twisty section, saw me top 8 all weekend but unfortunately I was way down on sector 2 and sector 1 was equally as bad leaving me 16th despite finishing higher up elsewhere. It was a bad result, not completely the bike’s fault as I was probably mentally in the wrong place having badly broken my pelvis at Donington in March but I’ll dust myself off and have another go at Cadwell Park, my favourite circuit in the country.

Qualified: P9

Race 1: P11

Race 2: P7

Race 3: P7

The Brooky Brief – On Pole in Anglesey 2016

Race Team Arkoni News

The Brooky Brief – On Pole in Anglesey 2016

Anglesey was a real turning point for me. It’s a very technical and quite physical circuit and rewarding when you get it right. I felt like I got it right this year!

To come away just 0.1 second off the lap record which was the fastest lap of the meeting, shows good form and I enjoyed my riding. It was a real pick up after what can only be described as a nightmare season!

Second in qualifying was bettered on the Bank Holiday Monday thanks to mega laps where the grid is reorganised based on fastest lap of the previous days’ races which put me on pole position. That’s where we aspire to be and this weekend I felt like I deserved it.

Myself, Phil, Paul and Martin from Arkoni worked really hard on the setup of the bike and it was great to repay the them with more than a sandwich and a cuppa here and there! It felt strange being at the front, almost spooky. I've not been P1 for 3 years since I started in the Pre-National 600s.

Race 1 was great, I was overtaken on one of the early laps by ex British champion Josh Day and it was a battle at the front for the 15 laps.

In Race 2 I led by 3 seconds until the halfway stage and then the front tucked at the corkscrew with no warming. I couldn't try pick it up on my knee and to be honest the nature of the corner is such that I didn't have a prayer anyway. Back to the drawing board. On a positive note my pelvis injury wasn't aggravated and the bike wasn't too badly damaged.

I led race 3 for 1 lap but then tucked the front again with no warning. I was livid! I knew I had an underlying problem as the Dunlop tyres are just way better than that.

After going away and doing some bench tests, my tyre warmers were ruined with cold spots. It wasn't my time maybe but I know it wont be my only shot at a win and I’m feeling confident for Donington, particularly now I can put the front tyre grip issue to bed!

A PB that knocked on the door of a lap record, pole position, a significant lead in the race and wonderful riding! Not a bad weekend’s work. Bring on Donny!

Kascarade Goes Underground

Project and Business News

Kascarade Goes Underground

Bradford rock band Kascarade has gone underground, quite literally, with the video for its latest single ‘The start of it all’ filmed beneath the streets of their home city.

The 4 minute-long video was shot inside Sunbridge Wells, a network of tunnels below Bradford city centre leading from Aldermanbury across to Ivegate that are due to be opened up to the public in the near future. It’s thought to be the first ever rock video made with the band performing within the tunnels.

‘The start of it all’ is the title track on Kascarade’s recently released debut album which also features songs from the band’s first five years and was funded, rather innovatively, by Brighouse-based metalworking firm Arkoni.

Maf Milnes, founding member and lead vocalist with the five-piece band, commented: “The tunnels have been closed since the 60s and it is rumoured that the Beatles played there after a gig at the Odeon (Gaumont).

“We thought it would be a good idea to film a music video there. The tunnels open at the end of this month so we're hoping it will draw parallels with the band's recently re-released first album as well as the regeneration of Bradford’s city centre.

“The video also features scenes from a derelict mill, a now lost regeneration project that serves as a visual reminder that for each success in life, there are also failures to overcome.

“Shooting the video down there was great fun. It’s an incredibly atmospheric environment and we are hoping it will prove to be a big attraction for visitors to the city,” added Maf.

The full video can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/kascarade

Brooky's Brief from Rockingham

Race Team Arkoni News

Brooky's Brief from Rockingham

I am asked regularly how I feel about the results and the best reply I'll give of late, unless I win, is "mildly satisfied". Basically that means that I felt like I did a good job considering.

Winning is the aim of the game and, despite maybe seeming unrealistic to some people at the minute, that’s what I’m chasing so anything less is off the mark BUT I feel like the Rockingham weekend silenced a few critics and showed that I am not messing around. I’m prepared to stick my neck out regardless of my recent injury and I’ll keep on digging until I get where I want to be. Obviously I do have to be realistic and accept I’m four rounds behind in one of the most competitive race series in Europe, so I’ll take a 6th and two 5ths going 1.6s under my PB.

A huge positive from the weekend was that it stayed dry! I've really struggled to get dry time since getting back on the bike 4 weeks ago. I needed some back to back dry time to build my confidence and I got that this weekend so it was a relief! I’m still learning the setup on the Dunlop tyres too and I’ve only done the one dry round at Brands in a cold March since I switched from Pirelli last year. My team learned a thing or two there. On a slightly negative note my stock engine which I’m still running from last year was really highlighted at Rockingham, I was getting hammered down the two long straights. There isn't money in the budget to tune the motor so I’ll just have to live with that for now.

On reflection I have a really positive outlook towards Anglesey for the next round and hope to continue making steps nearer the podium towards the end of the year. I owe it to everyone at Arkoni and all my other sponsors, friends and family. Time will tell but my head is in a really good place at the minute and that's half the battle!

Brooky’s Brief from Oulton Park

Race Team Arkoni News

Brooky’s Brief from Oulton Park

Oulton Park really tested my mental strength. To come back to such a competitive championship having missed 3 rounds was difficult in itself which wasn't helped by inclement weather throughout the weekend.

The first few sessions went OK. With Oulton being such a fast circuit it was unusual getting my brain back into the swing of going so fast on such a tight and technical circuit. I could tell I was de-tuned from the crash through the fast corners but that was to be expected. In the second session I changed my rear tyre compound which helped the bike drive off the slower corners and made a change to the brake pad compound to improve feel on full braking force. I also changed gearing as the settings from last year were redundant due to the new Dunlops I now run. They are a different shape and rolling radius which throws everything out slightly. I felt better at the end of session 3 but I still needed to sharpen up big time.

Right on queue the rain came before the qualifying session so we had a rushed tyre change. I would usually have a spare wet bike but its currently in for repair after the crank let go so we put a wet setting in and fit wet tyres ready to go. Typically the track was right on the edge of becoming dry in some places yet splashy wet in others. I started out 10th in the wet conditions but as the session went on a dry line appeared really quickly and as people came in to change to a dry bike I had no choice but to stay out and work with what I had, 18th was all I could do as the times got faster and faster.

I was livid with the qualifying position to be honest. I’ve busted a gut to get back fit as quickly as possible and at least on the bike I was fine, so to be held back by the weather was a pain, I genuinely considered canning the meeting as I didn't think I could do anything from 18th on the grid. After much deliberation I dug in and decided to grit it out, I also found a fault with the front end of the bike from my crash which left me no choice but to drive back home to Bradford to repair it, I eventually got to sleep at 1.30am. It was worth it though, the front end was much more planted in morning warm up the day after.

Race 1…what can I say, it absolutely chucked it down minutes before we were due to go out. No spare bike on wets meant we had no choice to sit out the race. Race 2…I was adamant I could get a top 10 result from 18th with the improved feel. I sharpened my elbows and pulled 9 positions back in lap 1 to finish 9th. Every time I rode the bike I found more confidence in myself and all things considered I was happy where I finished. I’ve got a test booked before the next round to try and play catch up and hope to be nearer the front come Rockingham in a month's time!

Sometimes you've just got to forget about positions and take stock. I’m racing, I’m bike fit and Im back to work having made a full recovery after an accident which could have ended my career. I'll live with that for now!

Record Month for Arkoni

Record Month for Arkoni

Brighouse-based Arkoni Metalwork has just recorded its best ever month for new contracts in its 25 year history.

The firm, which specialises in fire-rated glazing systems and architectural metalwork, picked up a number of contracts in June amounting to just short of £2 million including a £1.4 million contract for a large commercial development in Reading.

June’s order book eclipses Arkoni’s previous best month in July 2014 by almost £400,000.

Arkoni founder and MD Mark Prentice commented: “Despite the uncertainty and chaos caused by ‘Brexit’ and the recent downturn in construction it appears we are bucking the trend.

“We have picked up the contract for the second phase of works at Forbury Place in Reading where we will be repeating our contract for phase one that involved the installation of what is believed to be the largest butt-jointed, fire-rated glazed atrium in Europe over eight floors.

“In addition we have won a £200,000 contract for door sets and glazing at the Royal Academy of Arts in Central London and a £80,000 project at St Fagan’s Museum in Cardiff.

“We still have a lot more work in the pipeline including a potential £3.5 million school project. It appears that 2016-17 could be our best year of trading yet,” added Mark whose firm employs 60.

Brooky on the Comeback Trail

Brooky on the Comeback Trail

Bradford’s leading motorcycle racer Dave ‘Brooky’ Brook of Team Arkoni looks set to begin his Thundersport GP comeback trail at Oulton Park at the start of July (1st-2nd) just three months after falling off and breaking his pelvis at Donington.

Dave, who’d made a positive start to the 2016 season with a number of podium finishes, explained: “I started training back at the gym properly at the start of June. I’m still limited in what I can do for fear of damaging myself in my pelvic region but I’m walking and can almost break into a jog!

“I’m having regular physio to try and bring all the muscles back up to speed. It sounds daft but I had to learn to walk again!

“The surgeon says my body will take a crash should the worst happen but has encouraged me not to fall off too often!

“Seriously though, I feel physically very good, my upper body strength is still good and only marginally reduced from pre crash, my core strength is poor although I’m "planking" and doing other random core exercises throughout the day to bring it back as good as I can within the timescale.

“Those outside of the racing fraternity will think I’m crazy and that I should have retired after this "big one" but the truth is the last big one was just as bad and that didn't put me off when I broke both my wrists and collarbone in the same sitting.

“These things happen. You learn, stay positive and move on. I love racing bikes way too much so I can guess you could call it an occupational hazard with occupational therapy thrown in now and then!

“I rode a bike on the test day for the last round recently at Cadwell Park and it was surprisingly comfortable. The purpose of the run out was to see if my flexibility was a limiting factor in my riding. It didn't appear to be although I was only pottering round. Riding at the limits is a different story and I won’t be able to do that until Oulton.

“My chances in the championship are obviously out of the window. That hurts more than the injury to be honest but you can't have it your own way in this game. If it’s not crashing it’s money or something else but I’m lucky to have the support of Arkoni Metalwork behind me and a host of other sponsors.

“My goal for this season is be as near to 100% fit by the end of it and ready for next year to chase podiums and race wins. I’m quite capable of that but I’ll also be out to have as much fun as possible!” concluded Dave.

Arkoni MD Mark Prentice commented: “We feared this might be the end of Brooky’s season but he’s picked himself up and surprised us all with his fighting spirit. We’re all looking forward to seeing him in action at Oulton!”

A Great Start of it all for Kascarade

A Great Start of it all for Kascarade

Over 100 local music fans packed into the Delius Arts & Community Centre on Great Horton Road recently to see Bradford band Kascarade launch their long awaited debut album.

Five years in the making, ‘The Start of it all’ features 11 tracks penned, recorded and produced by the five piece Indy outfit.

Kascarade was formed in 2010 by vocalist and guitarist Maf Milnes together with his brother Luke on lead guitar, Adam Brankin on bass, Martin Horton on keyboards and synth and drummer Carl Bower.

Maf commented: “It was a fantastic night and a great opportunity to play all of the tracks on the new album in front of fans and friends of the band and performing live within a former church was a fascinating experience.

“We’re proud to be from Bradford and the city has had a big influence on our music over the past six years

“We wouldn’t have been able to get the album off the ground without the support of Brighouse firm Arkoni Metalwork who have provided invaluable sponsorship support in recent years.

“It’s an unusual way of funding a band but we’re not complaining!” added Maf who made a special presentation to Arkoni MD and founder Mark Prentice during the gig.

Mark commented: “It’s very encouraging to see how far the band has come in recent years and I’m sure their new album will help to establish and cement their reputation further.”

A Bradford Band ..Born and Bred!

Kascarade unveil new album cover and launch gig details.

Bradford Indy band Kascarade are gearing up to launch their new album “The start of it all” at a gig at the Delius Arts & Cultural Centre, Great Horton Road, on Saturday 30th April.

The band, formed five years ago, will be playing the full list of tracks from the album which has been made possible thanks to funding support from Brighouse-based metalworking firm Arkoni.

The new album cover has been released and features a night time view of Godwin Street in Bradford City Centre looking towards the Odeon building.

Lead vocalist Maf Milnes, one of the band’s founding members, commented “We’re Bradford born and bred and have always been proud of that fact.

“The album features a number of songs directly relevant to the city and we opted for an image that reflects the fast changing pace of life of Bradford.

“We’ve spent the last five years building up a solid portfolio of songs and performing at many iconic music venues and festivals across Yorkshire. We’ve been working on the album for around a year at our Thornton Road studios and we’re delighted with it. We hope it will go down well!

“It’s great to have the financial support of Arkoni. It’s allowed us to acquire the latest sound recording technology which adds a real professional edge to the whole project.

“We’d love 2016 to be our breakthrough year and are actively talking with festivals, promoters and record producers with a view to increasing our profile. I’m biased but I believe we put out some great music and we just want to share it with a wider audience,” added Maf.

A few tickets still remain for “The Start of it all” priced at £5 from www.kascarade.com

Brooky All Set for New Race Season

Race Team Arkoni News

Brooky All Set for New Race Season

Bradford's Team Arkoni motorcycle racer Dave "Brooky" Brook is getting ready for the new Thundersport GB season with a new set of objectives and a bike that's fit for purpose!

This will be Brooky's fourth season of competing in Thundersport GB, considered a proving ground for British Superbikes and the prestigious GP circuit, and he's hoping to build on his impressive overall 4th place finishin 2015 as he takes to the track at Brands Hatch next weekend (March 5th/6th) for the opening salvo with his Kawasaki ZX10.

Refreshingly honest and candid, Brooky is his own worst critic as he explained: "I made progress last year and moved up the rankings but I didn't progress as much as I'd have hoped. That was down to the bike and my own decision making at times. It's an incredibly fast learning curve and there can be no room for error!

I considered moving up to the British Superbikes level but have opted for another go at Thundersport GB. It's getting ever more competitive and the grid is filling up with some very talented riders so I'll have to be on my mettle.

Last year was a mixed bag. I achieved some great results but there were just as many disappointments along the way. You really have to push it at this level but it's all about managing risk as each race plays out.

Over the winter I've been out to Spain to test the bike which has been modified with recalibrated electronics. It's a vital adjustment and gives me more trust in the bike's capabilities.

I've also had far more involvement from RFS Engineering based next door to my unit on Thornton Road Industrial Estate. They have played a big part in getting the bike up to scratch and I can confidently say it's fit for purpose.

We couldn't achieve anything without sponsorship and that's why the support of Arkoni, RFS and other backers is so critical. I'm delighted that fire-rated glazing specialists Arkoni Metalwork are backing me again."

Mark Prentice, MD of Arkoni, commented: "Brooky and Team Arkoni have made some great progress over the last 3 years. We've followed him around the country and we're only too pleased to continue our support."

"I'm raring to go and more motivated than ever. Brands Hatch cannot come along soon enough!" concluded Brooky.
